TOPIC 6 : TAKING LECTURE NOTES.

Dear Diary,
For today UED102 class, I was being teach by Sir Mohamad Kamil Ariff Bin Khalid. As usual, Sir Kamil lecture was started by using power point presentation. He introduce to all of us about

The things that I learned from Sir Kamil lecture :

Part 1: TAKING LECTURER NOTES.

THE BIGGEST LIE I TELL MYSELF IS "I DON'T NEED TO WRITE DOWN, I'LL REMEMBER IT"

As a student, for sure we will not remember all the things that have being told because we have many subjects to learn. It shows that, taking lecturer notes is an important things in student life.

Why we need to take lecture notes?

As a student, we need to be an active listener when taking notes so that all the information that we have wrote was accurate. The record will also being useful for repetition materials and we can interpret, condense, and organize information well.

How to take lecturer notes?

We need to read about the topic before the class started. We could identify the main idea so that we can organized notes easier and familiar with key terms. We should sitting in front of the class to increase our concentration, review notes during last class and make some discussion with friends about the topic.

How to become an active listener?

As I said earlier, we need to read, review last set or past year question before the class session started. It will help us know a bit about the topic. Next, we should sit in the lecturer vision so that we can hear and see clearly when the lecture begin. We also have to decided things that we should listen with full attention physically and mentally (open mind). Sometimes, we need to control our emotional responses with lecturer. We need to listen for the main point and related details carefully when jot down the notes. It is better if we done "ask and answer question" in the class openly so that everyone will being courage to ask without feel embarrass. Lastly, we need to monitor listening by checking with lecturer and classmate if we unsure of some information.

Part 2: EFFECTIVELY NOTE TAKING SYSTEMS.

The Cornell note taking system: Excellent format setting up note page. It is 8.5 inches X 11 inches notebook. It has recall column, cue column and summary column.

  • Notes column: Take note during the course of the lecture.
  • Cues column: Fill in Questions, main points, visuals, and clues after class.
  • Summary column: Summary of the topic for reviewing process after class.

What to includes note?

About the notes, we can put the main point as a heading, The details should be wrote about any facts that explain the main points.

What to include in the notes?

  • Discussion Class: Take notes about main question and jot down various points during discussion.
  • Mathematics and Science Classes: The subject that requires strategies. We can jot down the problems at left side while anything that lecturer says at the right side.
  • Power Point Presentation: We need to get use to know about heading and subheading. Copy the subheading and take notes while listening to the lecturer.
  • Online Lecturer Note: Some lecturer prefer post their notes on the course website. We can print out the notes before class to build some background knowledge about the topic. We may edit notes given when listen to the lecturer.
How to review your notes?

  • Recite from the heading : We can review notes by reciting it loudly to recall all the point. Next, we may check the note with friends if we were missing anything about the topic information. This method will help the student learned material in a integrated way.

  • Recite from the recall : We can use recall questions to test our memory of the main point. This can help us to learn the material in an isolated way. It may help us learn about specific answers to specific questions.

  • Talk about the information with others : We can talk about the notes with our friends. We can share or exchange our note information and explained it to other people so that we can recall the topic while teaching. So, it is a good things to have a discussion with our friends to review notes.
That's all for today. I hope I can practice what I learned today.
