TOPIC 1 : GETTING READY TO LEARN

Dear diary,

For today, all of students that taking study skills subject are gathering in Dewan Titiwangsa. We need to listen carefully to our Assistant Rector, Encik Fauzi bin Azmi . He will teach us about the first topic in Study Skills subject using a slide. Quickly I list down the important thing he said in my note book.

Some of the things that I have wrote down:

He is informing us about the topic that we will learn for this interim semester.
Topic 1: Getting ready to learn
Topic 2: Goal setting
Topic 3: Library and Campus Resources
Topic 4: Time management and organizational skills
Topic 5: Memory learning & improving concentration
Topic 6: taking lecture notes
Topic 7: Academic integrity and performance

He telling us about the assessment:
Video assignment : 40%
E-Portfolio [blog] : 60%

so the total of our marks will 100%.

Alright! Lets move to the next one!

After the Assistant Rector telling us a bit about study skills marks, he begin his class session for the first topic which is "Getting Ready To Learn" by using a slide show.

"You're not in school anymore. You must gearing up for university/ college academics life." said the Assistant Rector.
A few second later, he is showing and telling us about the differences between school and college academics. It is to make us know a bit about student life in university. Well, most of us are still not get use to stay here.
Differences between school and college academics:

  • When you are in university, you spend less time in class but more time studying outside of class (hopefully). You have more reading, fewer test, and maybe you will not remember due dates and exams.

  • There are fewer daily assignment and they may not be checked. You might be study in the same place and the classes are bigger. However, please take note that the instructors do not tell you exactly what's on the test.

  • Next, you will have more team/group assignment meetings outside of class  because generally we have different group in each subject.

  • The attendance may not be required. There is no extensional on due dates and participation affects grade and fewer reasons for excused absences are responsible by the student own.

  • The student learning and behavior sometimes will be different than school because of a friends. You should find a good friends that will help you to achieve your dream in the future. A good friends will not wasting your time and they always wanted to do study discussion.

  • Other than that, you only have a certain instructor for a few months. Instructor will not tell you exactly what notes to take. You must find it yourself. For your information, you can drop a class if you can't follow the subject.

  • Some instructor mostly are not be trained in education and you may have Teaching Assistant or Graduate Assistant as an instructor. You also may have an international instructor too but not all campus will have international instructor. One thing that you should aware is lecture and readings may not overlap 100%.

  • Not to mention that you may living on your own, have a job, making new friends, in a relationship, in a new setting or city, involving in lots of extra activities and managing your own finances for the first time, using a planner to make a weekly schedule, make a master list of all assignment, projects, an exams for entire semester. It is the good if you get to know your personal style study. You can ask advice from counselor if you did not know your style working in studies.

IMPORTANT THINGS!!

  • Please read the subject first before the class starting. It may help you to understand easily when the lecturer begin his or her lecture. You have to take only the important note when the lecture begin. Why we need to do that? The reason is, you will not make it happen to list all the things that being told by lecturer, so, for not burning your time, you just need to take a note that will being use in project or assignment. Don't forget to go to every class. Get to class earlier so that you can review notes and reading.

  • Lastly, you should not procrastination in your university life. Please managing your time as well enough." said Assistant Rector.

That's all the things that I learn from the Assistant Rector and the gathering is over.

We will start our UED102 class group RB1B next week!
I really hope it will be an enjoyable class.
