TOPIC 5 :MEMORY LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION.

Dear Diary,
For today, Group RB1B is being lecture by Miss 'Ainatul Fathiyah Bt Abdul Rahim and she telling us that we can call her "Miss Aina". She gave us some advise about learning and sometimes telling us about the pass year student who achieve 4 pointer and so on. What are their recipe for being the best in academic?
that will be the things I would like to share for today.

The things that I learn from this topic are,

-Understanding memory process
-Memory strategies
-Understanding concentration
-Improve to concentration
-How to read / study system by using CSQ3R formula

Okay, now we start with the course description of "Memory Learning and Improving Concentration".

  • It is about how strong our mental to restore somethings that happen in our daily life.
  • It just to know anything about our body
  • We can polish our memory after studying this topic.
Yeah.. for sure at first I feel bored when the class started but Miss Aina knew how to make the whole class not being sleepy with some jokes, story and a some surprise question.

Knowledge comes with learning, skills comes with experience, attitude never comes, developed.

Skills-skilz
-is the ability to do something well.

Do you know that:

this is the percent of knowledge you get when study.

from Lecture : only 5%
from Reading : 10%
from Audiovisual : 20%
from Demonstration : 30%
from Discussion : 50%
When you Practice doing : 75%
when you teach others ; 90%

Source: National Training laboratory, Bethel, ME.

Its is better to do your own notes after get the lecture notes. And all the resources are connecting when you teach others. Please, don't be scared to teach others because the one who get the most profit about knowledge is you! The things that you teach will restore in your memory longer than you keeping it yourself.
Seek for the truth knowledge and you will be the best student ever.

Memory Vs Brain

"Memory" is the ability of the individual to store, retain and remember any information and experience either for a short time or for a long time.

"Brain" is an organ that being used as a part to think.

Next, Miss Aina shows us a words that represent colors such as BLUE, GREEN, RED and others but the color is not same as the words given.

After that, Miss Aina is telling us to read it.
At first I read the words based on color but something bad happen when I am in the middle of words. My brain were stuck and I cant read it while the others enjoying their reading until the end. Honestly, I feel shy because I cant finished it!

Then, Miss Aina asking who are reading by the color, or the words and who cant read it.

So, I pulled up my hand for reading the words based on color and for who that cannot read it.

Unfortunately, Miss Aina told us that for the students that read that slide based on colors, he or she are using right brain. For those that reading it based on the words, he or she are using left brain. Majority of the student were left brain.

"Alright, for those who cannot read it, please raise your hand." said Miss Aina.

"ohh great..." My mind thinking while I raise my hand.

"oh.. there two people in this class who cant read it. Alright. You may put down your hand." said Miss Aina.

so, I and the other one person put our hand down.

"For those who that cant read it, it doesn't meant you are cannot read it. But you are the one who cant use both of the brain symmetrically.

I feel shocked because  it is the first time i heard about it.

Okay, back to the topic.
For your common knowledge,
We can assume that the brain and memory  are like a computer.

Why???

ANALOGY BRAIN AND MEMORY = COMPUTER

  • Encoding/ input ( computer- keyboard, camera) are just like us human that has five sense which is ears, mouth, nose, skin, and eyes.
  • Storage ( computer - hard disk, thumb drive ) are just like human has three types of memory which is Sensory Memory (SM), Short-term Memory(STM) and Long-term Memory(LTM).
  • Retrieval / output (computer- computer screen, screen printer) are just like human that can writing and talking.

SENSORY MEMORY (SM):

It is your sensory ( 5 senses) that restored the information. Basically just for a short time but, if you focus more on that information, it will enter "Short Term Memory" (STM) but if you did not focus at all, the information will be lost.

Short-term Memory(STM)
STM is a process that allow information accepted dan restore in a short time in about 3 seconds to 24 hour from the SM.

This happen because the restore place has its limit. However, there are some information that can be transfer to long-term memory if the person has a high focus and repeating the information as many as you can.

Long-term Memory (LTM)
LTM mean memory that can be restore for a long time.

Normally, this memory will restore until the person is dead, but it still depends on ability of a person to recall back his or her memory in mind.

RECALL
Some people has a problem to recall back their memory or we call them a forgetful person. The person that has a good recall memory is a genius because they can recall back long-term memory frequently. If we want to be a genius person,  we need to stimulate, educate the brain through modern and traditional methods like maybe eating a balance food, taking vitamin B for our brain and doing some practice about the information that we need to memorize.

Why We Always Forgot Something?

It is because of distraction maybe from a friend that always distract us when study. Sometimes, some student did not pay full attention so that is why we did not know the answer when the lecturer is asking. Lastly, we did not get enough time to understand the information is be a reason for us always forget something.

We will easily remember something in studying when, we have interest in the subject, we always think that it is our own choice to study, rehearse the subject and do more practices. It will helping us for not being a forgetful person.

Massed Practice (not good) Vs Spaced Practice (good)

  • Massed practice- Cramming. It involve all study materials at the same time. Not have time memory (STM) and cannot sustain many information.
  • Space practice- Involve space time over some period of time of studying . Space practice or distribute practice allows time for the information to consolidate in LTM.
In my opinion, students should using spaced practice because it help us not being stress learning something last minutes.

Strategies Studies

  • Using Acronyms
Examples:
 MAS - Malaysia Airline System
UITM - Universiti Teknologi Mara

  • Using Acrostics/ catchphrase
Examples:
Carnivores- animal eaters
Herbivores- plant eaters
Omnivores- animal and plants eater

It will helps student to recall back easily if we using acronyms or acrostics, more over, for Public Admin students that need to memorize many law.

MNEMONICS

It is a memory tricks that being used based on the things we love or like at the surrounding. This tricks will make we feel fun when studying using acronyms or melody.

for example:

My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Nine Pies
M=Mercury
V=Venus
E=Earth
M=Mars
J=Jupiter
S=Saturn
U=Uranus
N=Neptune
P=Pluto

ELABORATION STRATEGIES

  • Imagery by visualize the image of the information needed.
  • We should find a good port when in the class
  • strategies= give high concentration when study to make sure we understand everything we have learned.
  • Use motivational to increase your interest in study, such as go to positive environment, deal internal personal with counselor or a person that you trust, use active learning, match your learning style, and monitor your concentration.
The causes of poor concentration is lack of attention, lack of interest, lack of motivation, distract from others, uncomfortable environment, physiological matter such as illness or tiredness,
and psychological such as personal problem, worries, and stress.
It is a good things for student if you overcome your own problem as soon as possible to make sure that it will not affect your studies.

STEPS ON STUDY (CSQ3R formula):

1)SURVEY- See overall topic about title, subtopic, introduction, graph, chart, pictures, summary of the topic.

2)QUESTION- Construct the questions. It will help your brain always thinking about finding answer.

3)READ- Read E-book, Journal to find the answer of the particular questions.

4)RECITE- Make summary notes about the topic, short notes, try to remember, memorize the important content, do some exercise or review the topic.

5)REWRITE- Read and review the notes.

****************

There are too many things that I have learned. I think that's all for today. I hope I can practicing on what I knew from this interesting topic. It's not easy, but, I will try my best.

Mind map about this topic that have be done by me.
